My 4 decades in the Pharmaceutical Industry : Riding the Wave of Change
Over the past four decades, I have witnessed the pharmaceutical industry navigating wave after wave of change—each one reshaping the landscape of drug discovery and development. From the era of closed innovation, where all research was done in-house, to the current model of open innovation and strategic collaboration, the industry has continually adapted in pursuit of sustainability and impact. Each technological breakthrough—be it in informatics, high-throughput screening, or molecular design—has arrived with the promise of revolution, often buoyed by hype before being tempered by practical limitations. The evolution from combinatorial chemistry, which chased numbers at the expense of quality, to fragment-based drug discovery, and more recently to DNA-encoded libraries (DELs), reflects this learning curve. Informatics, too, has evolved—from QSAR and docking to the current rise of AI. While the potential of AI to reshape the field is undeniable, its true influence is still emerging. Today, yet another wave is rising: the imperative to design drugs not just for efficacy and safety, but with sustainability and environmental responsibility in mind. In this talk, I will reflect on the lessons learned over nearly 40 years in pharmaceutical R&D—highlighting how the industry has learned to stay afloat, steer wisely, looking ahead to collectively shape the future of pharmaceutical innovation.
